Make a little room for colour
A simple invitation to put the screens down, pick up a pencil, and see where the page takes you.
A colouring session does not need a grand plan. A clear corner of the table, a handful of pencils, and a page you like are enough to begin. Let choosing the colours be part of the fun.
For children, offer a small selection of materials and let them take the lead. A purple tree or a stripy sea can be the start of a story. Ask what is happening in the picture instead of suggesting the right colour.
Try colouring beside each other. You can work on separate pages, swap colours, or take turns adding to the same picture. Keep the focus on spending time together rather than finishing a perfect page.
Before using pens, check whether the paper suits them. Put a spare sheet underneath your page if you are unsure about bleed-through, and choose materials appropriate for the child's age.
When you stop, leave the page somewhere you can return to it. A picture can grow across several short sessions. There is no deadline and no need to fill every space.
