The receipt was dated three days before Mara’s brother died. She found it inside a box that should have contained drainage surveys. Everything else on the trolley belonged to the old municipal works archive: culverts, retaining walls, the patient efforts of dead men to persuade water to go somewhere else. The box had the correct shelf number. It had even acquired the same grey fur along its lid. But the receipt inside named her brother as the person who had delivered it. Elias had never visited this building. She had spent the last six years discovering how many things a person could say with certainty about someone who was dead. This was one of them. She checked the signature. There was the tall E, the cramped remainder, the ugly little flourish he had used since school. Beneath it, in another hand, someone had written: Six items. Do not separate.
