A LITTLE CURIOSITY GOES A LONG WAY

Find a story for the mood you are in

Choose your next novel by the kind of reading experience you want, one question at a time.

Before choosing a novel, ask yourself what you want from your reading time. A fast-moving adventure? A character you can spend a quiet evening with? A setting that takes you somewhere unfamiliar? Your answer can narrow the shelf.

Read the description for clues about pace and tone. A mystery built around an urgent search may offer a different rhythm from a story about a family across several decades. Neither is the better choice; the useful question is which one interests you today.

Open a sample where one is available. Notice whether you enjoy the voice, whether the opening makes you curious, and whether the writing feels comfortable to read. You do not have to analyse every sentence.

Think about when you read, too. Short chapters may suit a few minutes between other activities, while an immersive story might be something you save for a longer stretch.

Give yourself permission to change direction. Put a book aside if it is not the right fit, and return later if you feel like it. Finding a good read is a conversation with your own curiosity.
